Life Legacy

Evelyn Urbis, age 79, of Houston, passed away Sunday, July 17, 2011 in Houston.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church in Cypress, TX. Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Cemetery near West, with Msgr. Isidore Rozycki officiating.

Evelyn was born September 7, 1931 in Waco, the daughter of Anton and Jeannie Mazanec. She attended Baylor University and Texas Women’s University, took a hiatus to become a housewife, and later received a Bachelor's Degree at the age of 37 at Texas A&I University in Kingsville. Evelyn taught elementary school for 24 years for the Corpus Christi Calallen Independent School District at Magee Elementary and Wood River Elementary. She was a scholar, being Valedictorian of her senior class at La Vega High School. She was an athlete, expert markswoman, chef,
pianist, Czech speaker, and a very religious follower of Jesus Christ
through her Roman Catholic Church parishes of St. Joseph's in Bellmead, St. Mary’s Church of the Assumption in West, St. John Nepomucene in Robstown, and Christ the Redeemer in Cypress. Evelyn was also a member of St. Anne's Altar Society, Catholic Daughters of America, and the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband, Joe F. Urbis and her parents.

Survivors include a daughter, Joan Teel and husband Dennis of Cypress; two
sons, Richard Urbis and wife SueZanne of Brownsville and David Urbis and
wife Kathi of Corpus Christi; her grandchildren, Karleen Pape and husband
Kyle of The Woodlands, Joe A. Urbis and wife Katie of San Antonio, Julie
Urbis, Lorraine Urbis, Margaret Urbis, and Sarah Teel;
great-grandchildren, Cameron, Carson, and Reagan Claire Pape;
sisters-in-law, Rosalie Urbis and Josephine Urbis; nephews, Mark, Michael,
and Pat Urbis; many cousins, great-nieces and nephews; and double first
cousin, Johnny Mazanec and wife Molly of Bellmead.
